In this economic climate you sometimes have to pinch the penny so hard Lincoln’s head will scream, but even then it can be tough knowing what to do and how to save.

Step 1 – Deal with debt
Get a feel for the weight of your debt. You can look into debt settlement when it comes to unsecured debt like credit cards, medical deb and unsecured personal loans.

Step 2 – Establish some goals
Got a video game you want to buy? How about a house? Figure out how much you need and start putting money away for the task at hand.

Step 3 – Figure out how much time it will take
Want to buy a house in the next two years? Figure out how much time it will take and stick to your plan.

Step 4 – Keep a record of your expenses
Decide how much you are spending on the essentials and how much you are spending for leisure. Maybe see about adjusting the numbers to work toward your goal.

Step 5 – Credit card discipline
Credit cards are to be used for emergency purposes from here on out until you get your debt under control. We’re talking mortgage payments, student loans, anything pressing that you have no other choice but to pay.

Step 6 – 10 for you!
One of the easiest ways to accumulate and save is to simply take 10 of your paycheck and put it into savings.

With the state of the current economy, more people are looking for ways to save more money and cut expenses. There are many books on the subject.

One source for money saving tips is the “Tightwad Gazette” by Amy Dacyczyn. It consists of three volumes. The series started out several years ago as a newsletter which was compiled into three books. Another auther is Mary Hurt. Some of her books are “Debt Proof Living”, “Debt Proof the Holidays”, “Debt Proof your Kids” and “How to Debt Proof Your Marriage”.

One way some people save money is by clipping coupons. Thers is a book, ” The Coupon Mom’s Guide to Cutting Your Grocery Bills in Half” by Stephanie Nelson.

A couple other books are “How to Save Money Every Day” by Ellie Kay and “10,0001 Ways to Live Large on a Small Budget” by various authors and bloggers.

There is a book by “America’s Cheapest Family”, the Economides family.

Some of these ideas may seem extreme but there are simple ways to cut your expenses. Every dollar you can save can make a difference. Money you can save on certain things can be used on other things you may need or want.

Many people think that they only way to save money on items is by using coupons. Although coupons can save you a lot of money, there are deals out there that do not need coupons, you just have to know where to look. Depending on the type of shopping you are doing will determine how to find the best deals on that specific product. For example, if you are looking for a certain name brand line of clothing you can go to retail stores that have them marked down. You can also search online for deals. When you do your shopping learn to go to the back of the stores and the clearance aisles. This will help you find the best deals out there.

Shopping at the end of the season is also a great way to find a good bargain. Shop ahead of time, especially when it comes to clothing. For example, if you want summer clothing wait until the end of the summer and buy for the following year. This method also goes well with patio furniture and seasonal items such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, and so forth. Waiting until the season is over and getting deals for the years to come will surely help you save money without using coupons.

Let’s face it, times are tough. Food and gas prices are sky rocketing, unemployment is high, and health care premiums continue to rise exponentially. Most of us will do anything we have to – that’s legal – to make ends meet. In the past, we were known as the throw away generation. Not anymore.

Becoming thriftier with each day that passes is the ultimate goal. You’ve heard the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. It is time to cash in on our trash, and there are a number of ways to do just that.

Garage sales, yard sales, and swap meets are often the easiest way to cash in your junk. If you have the inclination, there are many auction websites available where you can also sell your stuff. There is even a site that buys old electronics, working or not. Recycling centers will often offer you money for your item, particularly if it is metal.

Be sure to fix up your item, if possible, and clean it, making it look as new as possible. If you will be selling it online, ensure you have a professional looking photo.

If your item still hasn’t sold, try bartering it!
